I want to know about their homes, their day-to-day life outside of camp, why they came here in the first place. I want to know MORE about these characters - and not just in passing.

I like some of the crayon and spray paint effects used in spots. The illustrations are a bit inexact for my taste, but the colors are vibrant, and most of it is easy enough to follow. I lurves the gender representation here, obvs (extra gold star for that), and that's the cementing, standup-and-look-at-me awesome of this story. But not necessarily a story which made me think too hard. Totally engaging and fun and silly and adventures and juuuust a bit dark. Think Girl Scouts, plus monsters, and quippy-ness. Man, these people are obsessed with monsters of the three-eyed variety. You may not know "what the junk is going on" but it absolutely does not matter. This is funny and fun and sincerely joyful. Maybe I've been a bit free with the five stars lately but it really is so nice to find something like Lumberjanes #1 that sings the praises of girls and friendship and being a total loony because its fun and summers full of adventure and first loves in such a lovely, fantastical way. Your practically punched in the face by all the bright colors and fantastical creatures the girls encounter but its all so supremely delightful that you just keep flipping right along! Its a bit like a highly skilled grade schooler got into the glue supply again and just let 'er rip. The art work is as frantic as the story telling and full of boundless joy. This was a delight but be forewarned that you are getting dropped into the deep end of the swimming pool without water wings and the absurdist thrills never slow down so if manic hijinks aren't your thing I'd suggest looking elsewhere.īut if you can give yourself a moment to find your feet and hit the trail with the Lumberjanes you are in for a rollicking good time. I have no earthly idea what was going on in this fever dream of a story but it was all glorious good fun! Jo, April, Mal, Molly, and the stark raving mad Ripley are all bunkmates at summer camp looking for madcap adventure in this incredibly clever, sweet and sour ode to everything from girl power and the value of friendship to the importance of not triggering easily identifiable booby traps in secret caves.
